To create images which are in harmony with the
rules and tradition of this craft is the ultimate
goal of the artisan.
This is also the only way in which the continued
existence of the art can be guaranteed.
The "Kyoto Research Institute for Buddhist
Statues and sculptures" was established in 1962
by Mr. Hohrin Matsuhisa and
Mr. Sohrin Matsuhisa.
This institute was established in an attempt
to foster and nurture the next generation of
Buddhist sculptors and artisans both as individuals
and as a group.

The sculptures that are made in the institute
are displayed and worshipped at temples
throughout Japan.
Over 100 craftspeople have served their
apprenticeships here and have gone on to
graduate and become masters in their chosen
fields of speciality.

After Sohrin's death in 1992 the institute
was renamed, "The Matsuhisa Sohrin Buddhist
Institute" with Matsuhisa Yuka at its helm and
also Matsuhisa Maya and 10 other apprentices
fulfilling the wishes of Sohrin and Hohrin.
With an abundance of detailed research materials
the Buddhist artefacts are made with precision
and skill.

At the institute we have also widened
the scope of our work to include Buddhist effigies
and portraits in our already considerable range
of works.

We have it firmly in our minds that all of our works
will be passed on down the years to further
generations and that we must always endeavour to
work at the highest levels.
